Mobile gaming on the rise in the UK

by Games for Change

Not so long ago, if you wanted to play casino games online, you’d have to download casino software and also commit a certain amount of cash to start playing. Today, however, it’s far easier to play games online with no need to download and no need even to put any of your own money into an account to play. You don’t even need to play on a pc or laptop –- many casino websites now have mobile-compatible games.

So the news from a recent mobile gaming report from the research company comScore that there are now more than 20 million people in the UK who play games on their mobiles is no surprise. And six million of those play almost every day.

It’s not surprising that the uptake of mobile gaming has been so quick. The convenience factor is a big one - wherever you may be, you can now login for a few quick games at any time. It may be that you’re early for an appointment and have time to kill, or you want something to do on the commute to and from work. According to the comScore report, 33% of regular mobile players play on their commuter journey and 27% also play at work. Then there’s the choice of games - there’s a wide selection of games that can be played on iPhones, android or Blackberry devices, including blackjack, roulette and slots.

However, just because the gaming is taking place on the mobile, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be on the move when you’re playing. Nearly two-thirds of all the people playing on mobiles in the UK are doing so at home. And whilst the majority are gaming on their sofa or in their bedroom, almost a quarter (23%) play in the bathroom.

While a lot of the gaming on mobiles includes the wide range of games available through app stores like Google, the games provided in mobile format are also increasing in popularity. Slots in particular are a popular cash game choice to play on the mobile because you can play slots in the noisiest of environments and your game play won’t be affected. The outcomes on slots are totally dependent on the random number generator software rather than player skill.

Of course, the different gaming sites are keen to lock in new players, so there are plenty of great promotions available when you start playing on your mobile. Ranging from free spins to extra cash prizes, all the sites have something to tempt over a new player, and once they’ve chosen where to play, they usually stay there.

The trick for the games providers is to keep those players loyal after they’ve benefited from an initial welcome bonus for signing up. With one in three people now playing mobile games on a regular basis, there’s some
great business potential out there for all the gaming sites.
